Origins & History
Flat Design gained mainstream prominence in 2012 when Microsoft introduced Metro Design Language in Windows 8. Apple followed with iOS 7 in 2013, marking a dramatic shift from skeuomorphic design.
The movement was influenced by earlier design movements including Swiss Style, Bauhaus, and Minimalism. It emerged as a response to overly decorative interfaces that prioritized realistic textures and shadows.
Flat Design has evolved into 'Flat 2.0' or Material Design, which reintroduces subtle shadows and depth while maintaining the clean, simplified aesthetic. This evolution addresses usability concerns while preserving visual simplicity.
